The HoloLens is a cordless, mixed reality headset that runs on Windows 10. It runs on a natural user interface that interprets gaze, voice and hand gestures to control the experiences.
The HoloLens overlays reality with hologram-like images and objects—a type of augmented reality. A camera also looks out from the headset at the room, so the HoloLens knows where key objects such as tables, chairs and walls are. It then uses that information to project 3D images onto and into them. Microsoft see commercial use as a key application.
After its announcement in 2015, the Microsoft HoloLens Development Edition started shipping to interested parties in the US and Canada in 2016. It’s not known when a consumer version will be released.
