Oculus developed the Rift headset after a highly successful Kickstarter campaign. The first developer kit (DK1) was released in 2012, followed by the DK2 in 2014. The consumer version was released in early 2016.
The current version of the Rift has an OLED display, a 1080p, or 1080×1200, resolution per eye, a 90 Hz refresh rate, and a 110° field of view. Integrated headphones provide 3D audio as well as rotational and positional tracking via an infrared sensor that sits in front of the user. The headset is designed to work with a gaming computer.
There are a number of videogames available for the Rift and it’s also being used for immersive film, medical and educational applications.
