The cost of skills shortages and gaps to rail industry employers equated to £206m per year (£110m to the direct rail industry and £96m to the supply chain), potentially increasing to £316m per year by 2024 without intervention from industry and the government.

In 2018 PAULEY and NCATI embarked upon an ambitious programme to take the college’s new curriculum and turn it into a truly inspiring, engaging and highly effective programme delivered through Mixed Reality Technologies – Augmented/Virtual Reality. Harnessing the success of their previous award-winning work (The Learning Awards, Innovation in Learning Gold Award, Gold Winner 2016) with the National Training Academy for Rail (NTAR) – a joint venture between the UK Government and Siemens Plc, PAULEY set about developing an innovative learning solution capable of addressing a series of challenges.
Health and safety forms a huge part of the day to day running of Eurostar operations. Their engineering base in London employs NVQ level apprentices and a crew of experienced staff for technical support and maintenance. Every member of staff is required to undergo regular training sessions to ensure they maintain the skills required for the job. Training has always been run on site using a real train. This process can be costly, and tricky, as training has to take place on power cars that are currently in service, and are required on short notice to return to service…..
The future growth of our railway will depend on our ability to utilise the best of modern technologies to develop new digital solutions that can improve the way trains are run and help put passenger and freight users at the heart of railway operations. Having gained expertise and knowledge in rail asset management both with asset operators and owners, PAULEY have devloped digital tools that enable quick and efficient decision making in real time through a collaborative environmet that can be accessed from anywhere.
Our Dynamic Schematic tool assists in the move towards predictive maintenance by flagging and helping to resolve defects before they are able to have a signigicant impact on operational performance. The PAULEY Dynamic Schematics allows engineers to learn the functionality of electric schematic diagrams within the train’s power and communication components.
The simulation using AR takes availability of data on to the train or site so that problems can be identified in service, managed in service, or reductions in service planned such that disruption in minimised, and in a depot or on site we move to preventative planned maintenance rather that disrupt the depot or actual delivery
PAULEY have the capability to replicate the current systems and technology seen within physical station control rooms in Augmented Reality format. This allows staff to manage and monitor activity and assets through one headset rather than multiple screens. The visual management system uses a 3D model of the station and all linked assets to create an immersive working environment that enables collaboration and quick and effective decision making. Replacing a series of numbers and words on multiple screens, the AR platform is more engaging and reduces room for error. When a train pulls into the station, rather than seeing dots on your screen you will see a 3D locomotive asset pull into the 3D station model, and when a fault is identified, the visual asset will flash at you.
Rail investment in the UK is at record levels with nearly £53bn to be spent on the railway in England, Scotland and Wales from 2019 to 2024.

Building a Digital Twin of an existing or proposed asset enables you to engage stakeholders in the planning process and to change components to see what impact it may have, without affecting the real thing.
PAULEY have recently worked with HS2 to build a digital twin of the proposed Old Oak Common Station using Augmented Reality. The primary aims of this project were to be able to train staff ahead of the station opening and to allow stakeholders to view and interact with the station ahead of its construction. Allowing all stakeholders to engage with projects before any building work commences, gives them a unique perspective on the project and enables companies to gain buy in early on in the process.
